Hey Reader, I was at a women's breakfast a few weeks ago and the keynote speaker stopped me cold. Her name is Shannon Rich, President of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, CEO and Founder of LeadHERboard, and someone who speaks in front of people for a living. By every measure, she's someone who has figured it out. And she has figured a lot out but what she shared is something I think a lot of us needed to hear. She talked about how emceeing the Hall of Fame dinner threw her off, not once, but two years in a row. Not because she couldn't do it. She absolutely could. But something about that particular event got in her head in a way she couldn't push past on her own. So she did something she doesn't always do. She asked for help. She worked with a therapist who gave her a practice, something to say to herself out loud as the lead-up to the event unfolded. A way to pause and slow down instead of white-knuckling through it. And it worked. The part that stayed with me wasn't the practice itself. It was the way she said it: "So I did something I don't often do...I asked for help." She was ready and willing to accept support in order to get a different result. That's the whole thing right there. I think about how many of us have something we've been pushing through that might go differently if we asked for help. Maybe that looks like a therapist. Maybe it's a coach, a walk with a friend, or finally saying out loud the thing that's been swirling around for weeks. Whatever support looks like for you...ask for it. It doesn't make you weak or incapable. It makes you human. Cheering you on, P.S. Today is the last day to sign up for The Pause Post and receive July's letter (a monthly card, real paper, your actual mailbox) for the woman who could use a monthly reminder to pause. $12/month, cancel anytime |
I write for women business owners who are successful, capable, and quietly exhausted by how much they carry and still somehow wonder if it's enough. I'm Amanda. I'm not your hype girl. I'm the friend who gets it. Subscribe for honest, weekly notes on what it actually feels like to do a lot and still give yourself permission to pause.
Hey Reader, How many first-day-of-school pictures have you scrolled past lately? From kindergarten backpacks bigger than the kid wearing them to the (genuinely shocking, see below👇) professionally-designed college dorm transformations... it's everywhere right now. Fun to see, but here's the interesting part: that whole back-to-school moment does something for our brains even decades past needing new pencils. It's called the Fresh Start Effect. It shows up at New Year's, on birthdays, and...
Happy August Reader, We've entered one of the weirdest months. It's kinda summer, kinda creeping into fall. Where I live it's still sweltering, but pumpkin candles are already hitting the shelves. I love pumpkin season. I'm just not ready for summer sunshine to end. You might be feeling that same tug-of-war. Part of you wants to hang onto slow summer days, part of you is ready to get back to a routine. Good news: it's coming. September and October tend to be the most productive stretch of the...
Hey Reader, do you remember the song "The Boy Is Mine"? Brandy and Monica, two of the biggest pop stars of the 90's and everyone assumed they hated each other. So they got in the studio and made a song together and it was a hit! A true win-win for everyone. (If you want to go down memory lane, here's the music video link. You're welcome 😉) In the spirit of women supporting women, I wanted to share a few things with you today: First, my friend Sabrina. She runs a fantastic business and hosts a...
